Despite not being a proponent of Valentine’s Day, I do get that it is a fun excuse to spend some quality time with a loved one. We still don’t have plans any plans for the big day. Actually we kind of do. We’re doing nothing and I can’t wait! We’ve had a busy few months, so it’s always nice to have a weekend with no plans. Of course, we won’t actually be doing nothing, because that would be so boring, but with no plans other than clean the flat and do the groceries, we’ve got the whole weekend to chill out and binge watch shows while eating non-stop.
I think the one effort we’ll make with regards to Valentine’s Day is in the food department. I feel like dedicating the entire weekend to eating awesome food and doing something a bit different to the norm food-wise. I’m talking pancakes for breakfast, something involving lamb cutlets for dinner and chocolate fondants for dessert. And then, because I’ll have eaten myself silly with food on Saturday, I’ll make this smoothie for breakfast on Sunday. And maybe lunch as well. I’m planning on being that stuffed.
This smoothie is the bomb. And would you believe that it’s healthy? It’s sweetened with honey and uses cocoa powder for its chocolate flavour. It was kind of a revelation for me as well, because it contains milk. I’ve mentioned in the past my dislike for fruit smoothies that contain milk or yoghurt. I’ve never been keen on milk (of any kind). It’s the flavour, it’s the consistency, it’s just the whole thing. I do like chocolate milk and milkshakes, so I guess it’s because this smoothie is almost a milkshake that I don’t mind the milk in it. It was my first time trying almond milk as well. The verdict? On it’s own, not a fan (it’s still milk to me), but in this smoothie? It’s pretty damn tasty.
I’ve made this with both bananas and avocados. Both are delicious, but if you don’t like the flavour of bananas, go for the avocado, because you can definitely taste the banana. The avocado gives it a really smooth texture, and Iain said it reminded him of drinking Nesquik!
Healthy Chocolate Smoothie
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Cooking Time: 0 minutes
½ avocado, skin and seed removed (or 1 small banana if you don’t mind the flavour)
8-10 ice cubes
2 tbsp cocoa powder
2 tbsp honey (or golden/maple/agave syrup for vegan options)
1½ cups unsweetened almond milk (or another type of milk)
- Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend for 1-2 minutes, until smooth. Taste a small amount and if sweet enough, serve immediately. Otherwise, add another splash of honey and blend for another 30 seconds to combine, then serve.
